I wasn't allowed to reply in the other thread so I made a new one for us dog lovers .
I hope I'm in the right place .

EDIT by a Juju Slave: Clarified the title (was: 'Information about dogs re: help with my retreiver')

Personally, although I usually agree with the mods - I can't see why that thread was closed

As far as I can tell most of the posts were "help", both for teaching the dog to retrieve & also for a solution to the dog bathing in the bathroom. And for the life of me I can't see ANYTHING at all controversial in the thread

There was nothing controversial. Threads in "help" are supposed to be about one topic, the "question" in the thread title.
It started out as a question about how to get a specific dog to retrieve, then became a discussion about other dogs swimming and then became chit-chat "I am going to the store..." By the end it had nothing to do with a retriever (the title of the thread) so it was thought if people wanted to discuss dogs in general they should start a general discussion thread in another forum.

No one was being censored or reprimanded in any way.

So sorry dewcat - I just totally misread - thought it said "controversial" not "conversational" and that's why I was confused. I didn't think anyone was being reprimanded.

My apologies - I'll blame it on the grandbaby keeping me up all night! Next time I will open my eyes before I try to read. My bad

I bought my dogs one of the little kiddie paddling pools. Our little dog won't go anywhere near it. The medium-sized dog is intererested but doesn't want to put all 4 feet in it. We did come up with a game she likes though - I put toys into the water-filled pool, and she loves to take the toys out one by one and set them all on the ground outside the pool. This wasn't my original idea for the pool but she has a blast.

Oh well lunamaya at least your dogs is getting some use out of it and you never know when the middle of summer gets hear with all the heat they may be forced to get in .
I don't think I'll have any problem with mine getting in she's always looking for the nearest puddle , I have to laugh because it reminds me of a little child delighted that they have found a good puddle .

Yes they're just like little kids sometimes! I love watching dogs play in water. Mine love to go in the water if it's a lake or a dugout (just not paddling pools lol). Our little chihuhua mix hasn't actually gone swimming yet but she will play in the water. Our pittbull mix just realized she can swim recently, I just love watching her.

But you must be careful that your dogs do not drown. Sometimes in pools and lakes there are people who like to hold the heads of little dogs under the water until they are dead. Then they leave them floating for all to discover. Don't be surprised by what can be done in an overcrowded pool or lake on a hot day. I have considered doing it many times, but finally, I do not because I rather like dogs.

We are talking about little plastic kiddie pools and I don't think any of us would hold their heads under water .

I have another question , does anyone know how I can get my dog to stop barking when we go to take her out side , she barks so loud my computer monitor gets wavy lines in it and we cant even speak to on another because the barking drowns us out .
She is soooo loud .

OK I know this has nothing to do with my dogs behavior or training but I need to vent .
My stupid neighbor decided to play a game of fetch with my dog , then he gets the bright idea to hit the ball for her with a base ball bat .
She jumps for the ball as he is swinging , and he connected with her face , I know it could have turned out a lot worse .
I'm just so angry about this because my baby is in pain and 1 aspirin twice a day isn't helping much . I have to call the vet in the morning ,luckily she does not seem to have any problem except for the very large tooth that is now a stub . and the pain with said tooth .

I can just imagine the bill for tooth extraction , not to mention probably x-rays , the more I think about it the angrier and sadder I get , she's like one of my kids .

Demand that this idiot pay the bill. If he doesn't there are many fun things you can do to make his life miserable like leaving dog feces on his porch, etc. Have fun!

Jacqui that is awful!! I hope your neighbour felt awful for his stupid idea and that he at least offered to pay for the vet bills. Was it one of her canine teeth that was broken off?

The best solution is a bark collar. They're pricey (about $100 I think), but SO worth it as they solve the problem completely. They give a warning sound the first time the dog barks, then a small buzz the next time. This cured our barking problem in about two days.

Jacqui I'm so sorry to hear about the accident with your dog... I'm sure the neighbour thought it was a great idea for a fun game and just didn't think it through. I hope your pup will be okay!

Jacqui, your neighbour should at least pay part of the vet bill. Whether is were an accident or not I would certainly ask him to help out. I don't suppose liability insurance covers pets does it?

Thanks everyone , I just dropped her off at the vets this morning for surgery .
My neighbor drove me to the vets and offered to pay half the bill for surgery , so that's not to bad I didn't even have to ask .
The tooth is a large tooth with 3 roots and upon inspection by the surgeon yesterday they will have too look at one of her canines also .

Thanks Emily I just afraid she wont stop and keep getting shocked over and over , do you think its safe ? The reason why I ask is because a cousin of mine used the hidden fences for two different dogs and they both ended up with cancer , she thinks it was caused by the electric fence both times and wont use it any more if she gets another dog .
