Check the prize rules. If it doesn't state that you have to pay taxes, then you should be able to tell UPS to contact the contest company and get the taxes removed. I would never pay taxes on a prize unless it is stated in their rules. You could call UPS and explain that it was a prize and they might be able to refund you directly.

if it wasnt valued as a gift then they would take the value and do the exchange..anything over $20 gets taxed
canadians dont pay taxes on wins regardless of what rules will state..its against the law to even put that in rules..they can, however , state that you have to pay a shipping fee (which the rules will also state, that if you press enter you are agreeing to pay the shipping fees...the metal detector contest has this in the rules as well does the one dvd site)
