I find the dispensing fee at chain drug stores (i.e. SDM, Pharma Plus, etc.) very high. Even if you have health insurance, they'll usually cap the dispensing fee at about $8 or so for reimbursement.

So shop around when as to where you get your Rx -- I go to Loblaws myself ($6-something) dispensing fee (use PC card and get PC points!), but I'm sure Walmart and other reputable chain stores with pharmacies are comparable.

The thing to keep in mind is to try to stick to one pharmacy. My logic is that they'll have all your Rx's on file and will able to tell you of any drug conflicts. Also, you can be sure that they'll have your drug plan insurance info on file.

Actually if you go on their website you can give them your email address and they will send you special offers, etc. and let you know when they have a double or triple sales event, etc. For awhile they were giving 500 bonus points for giving them your email address. I just checked and they still are,

My sister-in-law works at Shoppers so she gives me a heads up whenever the point opportunities come up in case I miss them on email.

They used to have great offers like if you redeem points, you get half back or you only needed to redeem half to get the regular point level (i.e. 17,000 points for $75) but from what I've been told, that came to a stop and now they are only offering point offers when you're buying stuff not redeeming.

Yes, that IS important. People may think that the dispensing fees are high, but you really DO need around $7-8 to break even in the dispensary for paying for legal parts of dispensing. So places that have $4.99 dispensing fees are LOSING money over prescriptions, but gaining them elsewhere (eg. food).

does this mean it is an out of pocket expense? something that my health insurer would not cover?

last yr i cashed in my $75 twice and the 2nd time we purchased a travel dvd player for the car (it playes vcd's so its a bonus) and was $177 the lowest i've seen a portable dvd player (177 before my 75 cash in lol)

Your health care program probably covers the entire cost (incl. the disp. fee), minus a $2 deductible.

Next time you get an Rx, check the prescription receipt (stapled to the bag, not from the cash register). It should clearly state how much the dispensing fee is and how much the drug cost is.

I entered it for my mom and she lives in small town Sask. I used our local Home depot in Regina and it took it no problem, even though Saskatoons is closer.
