if you dont subscribe to the newsletters/let them give away ur info to third parties, or have them add u to their email list does this reduce ur chances or disqualify you? what to you guys do?

To answer your question this goes back to the important fact of: READ THE RULES..especially for smail mail and for online contests too..each contest is different..I have been contacted by phone, by snail mail and even by email..so just check the rules when you are on a website..if it says they will notify you..then just sit back and see if they do...if you don't hear..then you did not win...if they say you have to go back to the website to check winners' names..then do that..this is where being a 'good and efficient secretary' will help..keep track of what you are entering, etc etc. set up a workable system for yourself so you know what you are doing.

As for me in over the 20+ years I have won over 1 million dollar in prizes! hey..not cash..but in value of prizes..my favorite being my 27 holidays..yup..you read it right..I have won 27 vacations now and one time I won a car..There were many goodies in between from VCR's, tv's, shopping sprees, clothes, groceries, jewelry, mtn bikes. bbq sets, well.....my list goes on and on..so hang in there..do the work..and keep at it..the true optimist is the person who is NOT winning..but still does the work! for I know in fact that eventually you will win if you persevere!..good luck to all..;-))

Most companies want you to win..the STQ is merely to have you 'earn' the prize..this is the difference between winning a contest/sweepstake than the lottery....and the Skill testing question is always mathematical..example: 9 x 9 + 3 - 6 divide by 2...equals : ? just take your time... if you are given this STQ on the phone..the caller will give it to you....write it down..then repeat it back to the person to make sure you wrote it down correctly..I would always have a calculator handy ( I just would not mention this to the person on the other end though ) for myself...to be fair..I always do it by hand at first..then double check myself on a calculator..usually you are given 3 minutes to do this STQ..just take your time..they are usually very simple and make sure to double check yourself before you give your answer..can they disqualify you if you don't answer correctly..Yes..I believe they can..so make sure you do it right! ;-))

This happened to a bowl member last year. She got the question wrong and did not get the prize.

The skill-testing question is because Canadian law requires it-so they can NOT give it to you if you are wrong or they could get in trouble.

US contests that allow Canadian entries don't require the question, but they often require you to fill out legal affadavits and pay taxes before you get the prize.

Yes..you are right about US contests requiring you to fill out legal forms ( signed by notary public etc ) BUT I have also seen in SOME of the rules of certain contests... that canadians will be asked a mathematical skill testing question...so it is possible that they can ask this also..just thought I would mention this..;-))

My skill testing question from Cityline was what is 5+5? Ha ha I was so nervous I was going to get it wrong, when she said ok I have to ask you the STQ, then I laughed, so did she when she said 5+5.

I won a diamond anniversary ring (approx value $5k) from Canadian Business last year and, besides having to answer the STQ, all I had to do was sign the standard release form.

You can also get a document notorized by the Postmaster/mistress at your local post office IF they know you. That's what I did with a child.com win a couple of years ago.

Oh we were discussing....perhaps I did not clearly state..that the notarization is usually for contests opened to US and Canada residents......and if a canadian wins..that's when the notarization papers have to happen usually...( not always though for smaller prizes ) and of course..if one wins just a canadian contest only opened to canadians....one just has to sign the release forms to receive their prize....I have never been asked to notarize a release form for a canadian contest..and I've won thousands of prizes in the last 20+ years....
