The authorities don't really have any will to go after users right now, they are going after dealers.

Apparently, there are a whole what 'o' channels that the guys get with the hacked cards, that we don't get, as subscribers. And dam, its getting expensive to subscribe to the Works! Just maybe....

A friend of mine hacks satillites. He said they drive around and look for dishes. Then they compare the addresses with dishes to thier customer list... if you have a dish, and no subscription, they go after you.

I don't know if thats enough proof, though, what if you cancel you sub and leave the dish up?

He says to put a garbage bag over the dish so they can't see the brand.

They may not see the brand, however if you pull out a compas and look at the direction its pointed, its clearly different from BEV (at least in my region )

yeah that makes no sense, the driving around part etc cus if you do subscribe to expressvu you'll know that they tell you that you can leave your old dish up and they'll send you a new dish (for 50 bux i think it is) and then you dont have to crawl up on the roof in the middle of winter etc and i think its to encite the new owners to get a dish as well

Your right binabug. And just to let anyone who will be in the situation of buying a house with Expressvu installed... You are better off to go buy a whole new kit including the dish. Our house we bought came with Expressvu, dish and recievers. We phoned them up to activate and expected the current deal ($100 credit towards programming). No go! Even though we were new subscribers the fine print on their offers stipulates new subscribers PLUS new system. Now we know why the previous owners left the recievers as well...

oh apparently what they can drive around and check for is a signal that the device sends out...apparently its the same as the emergency broadcast signal and can interferre with airplanes and things

The way around this is just to buy a new receiver. You activate the new receiver as a new subscriber and then at a later date, add the existing receivers to your account. Then you can keep all the existing equipment and you'll have the one extra receiver. I guess it's what you would call playing their game but it's a way around the problem.

I used to hack. I had a DishNetwork system. It's great while it works but unless you want a new hobby of debugging your system, it's not worth it, particularly when you're in the middle of a program and the system cuts out. If you're not an expert in the technology or have a good friend who is, your satellite guy will be dealing with tons of other people at the same with the same problem. Aside from numerous phone calls, waiting, TV being down, there may be a cost element as well in getting the system up and running again.

I converted my Dish system to a Bell ExpressVu. It's the same technology. You can use the same dish but just need to re-point it. The receiver is actually the same as well but programmed differently depending on whether it's Dish or Bell.

As with everything else, there is no real free ride. If I were to get an American system, I'd pay the fees as a subscriber which can be done as well. However, unless you are really looking for specialized programming or tons of sports, the channel availability is pretty well on a par with the Canadian system. Granted you get more channels but most are network or network affiliates.

If you go the Directv route, the only way I would bother with it is if you have a programmer. Also, as mentioned above, its worth paying for a script service (just split the cost with 3 or 4 friends and it will cost you about $50 a year).

Personally, I liked the American dish better as it has HBO's, Cinamax, ShowTime, Sci-fi and others.
