I used to hack. I had a DishNetwork system. It's great while it works but unless you want a new hobby of debugging your system, it's not worth it, particularly when you're in the middle of a program and the system cuts out. If you're not an expert in the technology or have a good friend who is, your satellite guy will be dealing with tons of other people at the same with the same problem. Aside from numerous phone calls, waiting, TV being down, there may be a cost element as well in getting the system up and running again.
I converted my Dish system to a Bell ExpressVu. It's the same technology. You can use the same dish but just need to re-point it. The receiver is actually the same as well but programmed differently depending on whether it's Dish or Bell.
As with everything else, there is no real free ride. If I were to get an American system, I'd pay the fees as a subscriber which can be done as well. However, unless you are really looking for specialized programming or tons of sports, the channel availability is pretty well on a par with the Canadian system. Granted you get more channels but most are network or network affiliates.
