Skill testing question appears as such:

4x2-2x3=

What's the answer? I'm old school and I know there are some forward thinking fish in the bowl and I'm wanting to know my options.

:)

Yes, it is 2.

You do the multiplications first and then do the subtraction last.
It isn't new or old school.....just the way it is....

In my day . . . you worked the equation from left to right. IF there were brackets then you worked that equation first then worked it in FROM LEFT TO RIGHT.

No.

I am not going to tell you how old I am LOL...

But it always has been brackets first(do everything inside the brackets following the rules belowof multiplications/divisions first etc),
then you do the outside bracket equations ....
multilications/divisions (from left to right)
and then additions/subtractions (from left to right) last....

It always follows this format and has since the 16th century when it was called PEDMAS rather than BEDMAS (parenthesis rather than brackets)...

The order of operations has for centuries been done with multiplication and division before addition and subtraction. The only thing NEW about this, is that they came up with the initials BEDMAS to help people remember the proper order, and that they introduced this concept at an earlier grade than they used to.
In early grades the teacher writes equations from left to right to simplify things and puts brackets in to also simplify. If you only ever solved equations going from left to right then you could not possibly have passed high-school algebra. (unless your day was around the time Christ was born )

BTW-When people say "New math" they are really only referring to new ways of teaching it. There is no new way of doing it.

Well, the donkey was a bit of a pain on the way to the manger that night but . . . Seriously, I did algebra but I guess it has just been so long that I've become complacent or lazy. I have now saved BEDMAS to my desktop as a gentle reminder.

And thankfully, the administrator re-emailed me with a "hint."
