I rented "Shattered Glass" tonight. I've never quite felt that way while watching a movie. I'll attempt to explain.... Do you know what it feels like when you know you're being lied to? Okay, combine that with the feeling that you are lying and at risk of being exposed (as a liar). It's a really icky feeling. I felt that way for the whole 94 minutes of the film. The bonus feature of the real Stephen Glass is fascinating, too, but fails to answer what I feel is the most obvious question...WHY? He admits he lied, that most of his articles were bogus, that he's been in therapy for the last 5 years to discover WHY he did it...but the "60 Minutes" interview doesn't reveal why he lied, why he made things up. That was frustrating.

I feel like I have to do the research myself. BUT, how am I supposed to know what is fact & what are LIES?!?

Okay, so the "WHY?" question was burning me up, so I Googled Stephen Glass & found a fascinating article on salon.com by Kerry Lauerman written in Oct. 2003 (when the movie was released in theatres).

Here's a direct quote from Stephen Glass in the article on salon.com in response to why...

"...A deep, deep feeling of unhappiness of who I was, and a deep belief that I was not good enough, and I mean that in the broadest sense. Not good enough as a person, not good enough as a friend, not good enough as a writer, not good enough as a journalist, not good enough in any way. And a horrible confusion that if people around me thought differently about me than me, then maybe I would, too. And so I manipulated those views in a number of ways. One of the ways was lying about my life. Another connected way was lying in my stories. And those two things go hand in hand."

So, there it is. Oh, he also says he's not a sociopath. It's a great article. If you were as bothered as I was about needing to know more, that's the place to go.

I watched Gothika last week and thought it was pretty predictable...but I did enjoy it. I thought Halle Berry did an average job on the movie. It's a movie I could possibly sit through again.

I just rented a DVD on the weekend called "Westender", a film I had never heard of, made by and starring people unknown (to me). It is the story of a knight's quest in an invented medieval-type world. Overall it was good entertainment, although the acting was somewhat mediocre.
The cinematography was absolutely outstanding, to the point where I noticed it, which I usually don't. I also loved the crisp soundtrack, which really contributed to the overall mood.
I would definitely recommend seeing this. It was an engaging alternative to all the slickly commercial films.
