You're right, dewcat. The original 20gig and 60gig versions of the PS3 had full hardware backwards compatability with PS2 games. The early 80gig models had one of the hardware chips replaced with software emulation, and thus those early 80gig models were MOSTLY compatible with PS2 games. However none of those models are sold now so unless you're looking secondhand, you're out of luck.
All PS3 models will, however, play PS1 games no problem.
