Hey all...

I'm thinking of increasing my movie collection ever so slightly, so I thought a fun thread would be people's favourite movies. People can list what they like and why, and maybe I'll get some ideas as to what movies I'll be buying next.

But let me start off with some favourites:
In the drama department (although it's probably cross listed as a comedy), I think "Life is Beautiful" was an amazing movie. I prefer the subtitled version, it just seems better when listening to the Italian. Running a close second in the same category (dramedy, I guess) would be "Shakespeare in Love".

"Anna and the King", and "Casablanca", would be my choices for straight drama.

In the straight comedy department, I've watched "Ghostbusters" so many times (although sadly, not recently), that it's not funny. Some of the lines in that flick are hilarious!

For goofball comedy, and I know you'll all think I'm strange, but I howl every time I watch "Beavis and Butthead do America". The show itself wasn't that funny, but the movie - dudes, hilarious!

Sci-Fi, can't go wrong with Dune. That's a classic I've seen over and over again, although it's probably not for everyone. And of course, the "Star Wars" trilogy (and Episode 1 as well).

So those are a few of my favourite flicks. Who's got some others that they have seen many many times?

Wanting what I've got. Life is good!

I have to agree with "Life is Beautiful" definitely a chick flick that appeals to guys.

"Ghostbuster" is an all time great as well, classic lines like "Listen..., do you smell that"?

"The Princess Bride" is one of the all time greats that I think everyone should see. You can't help but walk around quoting the movie after you see it. Definitely in the comedy genre.

For something a little bit on the strange but good side of drama, "Being John Malkovich" is a very decent movie.

In the line of up and coming cult films, the work of Kevin Smith seems to be gaining some considerable ground. All of these movies "Clerks", "Mall Rats", "Chasing Amy" and "Dogma" have two characters Jay and Silent Bob in each of the movies. Kevin Smith is the Writer and Director of the movies and he also plays Silent Bob in each of the movies.

For the biggest waste of money I ever spent on a DVD, it would have to "Eyes Wide Shut". As part of my Stanley Kubrik collection it has a definite place, but it isn't a movie that I will ever watch again.

Hi tortilla! Welcome to the forums!

I think I'm agreeing with you on most counts. Princess Bride is a classic. I love the Rodents of Unusual Size.

John Malkovich was a movie that I loved - so offbeat, yet so funny! None of my friends liked it, but I've always had the wider taste range with movies.

Of the Kevin Smith movies, I liked Chasing Amy the best. Actually, perhaps that's a series of movies I'll go and pick up. Incidentally, the final movie in that series, "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" is in production now.

As for Eyes Wide Shut - I regretted I was ever dragged to the cinema to see that. What a waste of money!

Thanks for the input, though, dude!

ooh I love the "best flick" threads.. hmm I think I'll pick out my top 10 (in no particular order, just as they pop into my head)

1) Millers crossing - the BEST gangster flick ever, by the coens.. classic in every way

2) Unbreakable - Some people hated it, I loved it.. especially the fantastic, atmospheric music

3) Raising arizona - another coen movie. Sweet, funny, best movie nicolas cage has ever been in bar none

4) The Big Lebowski - yet another coen bros movie (do I sense a theme??) DAMN funny.. I've watched it probably over 20 times and I'm still not bored with it.

5) Toy Story 2 - Not just for the kiddies by any stretch.. 1 is excellent too!

6) any akira kurosawa samurai flick - ok cheating here but I had to mention all of these.. seven samurai, yojimbo, sanjuro, hidden fortress.. still totally entertaining despite being in another language and in black and white.. great

7) Manhunter/thief/heat - another cheat, but these 3 crime thrillers by michael mann are fantastic. he did a great job with the insider too but these 3 will really hold your interest with the lurid crime stories. Manhunter kicks silence of the lambs butt!

8) Die hard - probably my fav action flick ever. up there with ronin (love that S8)

9) Casino - favorite scorcese flick, and thats saying something! Love the music and the real captured feel of the time.. the clothes!

10) Evil dead 2/army of darkness - hilarious "horror".. bruce campbell cracks me up

Hmm there are more that I'd like to add too.. ones like 2001 + 2010 (huge hard scifi buff) and mebbe ones that havent "digested" enough yet, like memento (still working that one over in my head)

list subject to change!

In no particular order too:

  1. 12 Monkeys - The story, the accordian music, the set/art design, Terry Gilliam

  2. Brazil - Gilliam again. Off the wall flic about...well, you have to see it to understand. Definitely not for everyone.

  3. Spaghetti Westerns: Sergio Leone was a western god. The goody-goody John Wayne-type westerns made in the US can't touch Leone. The Good Bad & Ugly, Fistful of Dynamite, Once upon a Time in the West (<- I consider "Once Upon" the best western I've ever seen)

  4. Fight Club: I found this flic enthralling - stayed in my head for days and days. "I am Juju's slave of ambition!"

  5. Post Apocalyptic: I've got a soft spot for these post-nuke flics: Mad Maxes, Boy and His Dog, No Escape, Waterworld (yes, I like Waterworld! ),

  6. 60's WWII: These have a certain charm for me. Dirty Dozen, The Great Escape, Guns of Navarone...

Swingers was indeed money, baby.

Oh, and I've seen them all and no doubt about it: I can't stand Kevin Smith movies!

6. Blade Runner - Classic Sci-Fi

7. Jurassic Park - Great CG dinos, Gives the home theater a workout. Lost World and III were so-so.

8. Jack Ryan Movies - Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games. Very good movie versions of the Tom Clancy novels

Totallyyyyyyy~!@

Brian Cox does a much better job portraying a highly intelligent man without any scruples.. Thats what lecter should be, not the raving loony that hopkins overacted and hammed his way thru..

Plus a big mistake (imo) was showing the violence that lecter did against the guards/nurses/whatever.. its so much creepier when its just discussed what he did, while never showing it.. helps him keep his very "proper" bearing too.
