Ah, it could be. I thought the berries looked too red and the clusters too small and closely spaced. But that could be the photography and my amateur eye.

Mum didn't know either. She blames the crappy photo... It must be something fairly hardy if it's in zone 5 as Toronto is 5B. So I bet we've seen them around... Whatever they are!

My best guess is some type of Redbud tree. Possibly a "Purple Leaf" Redbud.

Redbuds have heart-shaped leaves and very showy pink or purple flowers in the spring, before the leaves appear. Definitely a "showstopper."
