Just got an update from Yak. They've dropped their long-distance calling rates to 5 cents/minute. (used to be 7 cents)

This rate applies 24 hours/day, 7 days/week to all calls within Canada or to the US.

Just dial 10-15-945-1 plus the phone number. The call will be charged at 5c/min and will appear on your phone bill (i.e. no need to set up an account first).

If anyone knows a cheaper pay-as-you-go long-distance plan, please post!

I still prefer to dial direct. The 3 cents a minute I would save (over my current plan) just isn't worth the trouble of dialing the extra digits..

Then you could make them your standard LD carrier (and avoid dialing the extra digits).

What is the connection like - any background noise??
Have you experienced any errors in billing. Are there any flat monthly fees charged? thanks.

I've been using them for 2 years. Crystal clear sound (try a call and judge for yourself).

No billing errors yet (that I've noticed).

No monthly charges. Just usage @ 5c/min.

I also use Yak. In general, no problems. On high volume days I have been unable to connect, but I'm not sure whether it's their fault or the carrier they use.

We use YAK all the time to call the states and it is great- and now 5cents a minute is great! I have never not been able to connect, and the quality is great. We are in Manitoba. I haven't seen anything cheaper that this.

There is www.idcalleronline.com which charges 5.9 c/minute, however you must pre-pay at their website. Haven't tried them yet. You have to dial their phone number first, but there is no PIN number.

Does anyone know if YAK will work with cell phones?

Yak unfortunately doesn't offer a calling card option. Does anybody have suggestions for that?

What are you on now that offers 8c/min with no monthly fee? And what are your rates on that plan if you want to call the US or Europe?

Most plans I've researched give good rates to specific countries, but high to others. Couldn't seem to find an "all-around" good plan.

I also use Yak for my US calls. However, I do have a plan with MTS that gives me 300 minutes to US for $39.95 a month, plus all my calls in Canada on this plan are free after 6pm my time and weekends..this works for me as I have a few friends that I talk to at least 2 or 3 times a week in Canada and we talk long. Once I get to my 300 limit I use YAK.

Now that Yak has lowered their rates to 5c/min, it might make sense to ditch your MTS account.

300 Canada/US minutes via Yak @5c/min would cost $15, rather than $39.95.
