Can anyone offer me their opinions on what they think is better?
I bought NAV last year. I believe it was around $50 or more. It tells me now everyday that is has expired and that I may not be getting the most updated virus software.
A friend uses Grisoft, just downloaded it for free and by the way she talks, it sounds very similiar to NAV. It gave her a big virus screen when she was infected, it scans all her email and downloads too. Sounds too good to be true. Would I be better off just saving my money and going this way for free or go and spend the money and buy the update of NAV?
What are the pros and cons for both?
Thanks so much

I only use Trend Micro PC-cillin now, paid 35 upgrade fee, I had
Pc-cillin for 3 years, no problems at all. Once it expired I went to
Telus free service, in three months I lost everything three times.
Although I do find Trend Micro's free Housecall service excellent
as well. www.antivirus.com

Well, while I don't know much about the free antivirus software out there, I do know that you don't knee to repurchase NAV every year. Just your subscription to the Live Update service has expired, and you can renew that for around $15 US. At least that was how much I spent last year. Hopefully someone else knows about the free services out there. I'd like to know myself.

Grisoft has always worked well for me. Whenever I d/l'ed a file off Kazaa or whatever that had a virus it caught it right away and purged it.

Computer Associates also has a free one here:
http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/index.cfm?

with a firewall built in. I doubt I'll switch though as Grisoft is good and CA offered a free virus prog a few years ago then suddenly dropped it leaving users with no virus protection (till I found Grisoft).

There's also ZoneAlarm for free firewall which I use in conjunction with Grisoft.

The key to a good AV software is updates! Personally I have used Grisoft for probably 4 or 5 years and have never had a problem. I update regularly though. Currently I am running the free 90 day McAfee software that came with the Dell deal. I definitely won't buy it though as it has some annoying little quirks. One being the "worm activity" warning. I belong to several Yahoo groups and when replying to emails with the same subject line a warning pops up. It delays sending the email until I give it the ok... It can get annoying really quickly!

Grisoft is excellent...I used to use NAV too, but gave it up due to the costly yearly updates. Grisoft is highly regarded in the freeware community....haven't read anything negative about it yet.

I quite like AVG at http://www.grisoft.com

There is a free version for personal use that really isn't crippled in any major way. It even found a virus on a friend's pc that NAV missed completely.

Recommended!

I also like Grisoft's AVG over NAV and McAfee. The secondary reason for this is because it's free. The primary reason is because AVG doesn't slow down my computer as much as the other two, especially NAV.

Dave.

Thank you for all the pros and cons. I don't really want to pay $15 US for an update when I can get it for free.
Now another question. Everyday, I have a pop-up box from NAV saying it is expired and do I want to subscribe to another year? How do I get this to stop from coming up everytime?
Sounds like Grisoft is the way to go. I haven't heard a bad thing yet. Would yous' suggest I delete NAV off my computer or let it run along with Grisoft?

Thank you

I would just uninstall NAV altogether.. no reason to have both running I don't think!

So, I downloaded Grisoft, I have a question. With NAV, a pop up came saying it was scanning outgoing and incoming email. I read that Grisoft does too, but how do i know it really is? I had no pop-up telling me it was working.

It's ok Queenie, it's working. That is actually one of the advantages to AVG, it doesn't seem to bog down systems with pop-ups like NAV. If you want to scan a aparticular email to double check just right click on it and the option will be there in the menu.

With AVG, no delay

Dear Queenie,

I have always belived in "You get what you pay for" If something is free, I would be suspecious. I am a computer network technician, and I have always trusted MacAfee or Norton Anti-Virus. For the money, I belive it is worth purchasing a copy or the Name Brand Anti-Virus.

In Norton, you can turn off the option of scanning in and / or outbound mail. Personally, I turn off scan outbound mail, but leave the inbound on.

I hope this helps

Robert (AKA H8toowork)
