Hey, you want a really, cool baking secret? This one was passed down from my grandmother who lived to be 99 years old...therefore, lots of wisdom behind the technique. 
Have you ever baked a cake that required the cake to be sliced into two layers? Many people get the toothpicks out for alignment and then grab the longest knife in their kitchen to start hacking at it. WRONG, wrong tedious approach!
All you need is thread. Yep, just regular sewing thread!
Snip a piece of thread that is long enough to circle the the cake layer and place it where you think the center is. Once the thread has circled the cake once, cross both ends of the thread over each other and pull until the thread starts going through the cake layer and exits the other side. Pull in the same manner as you would to tighten a knot.
This is so easy to do and works like a charm every time! And, your cake layer is split into two perfect halfs.
