I totally agree. Why should people like this get sent to jail to have free room and board, free everything, at our expense? Capital punishment is the only thing the US has gotten right that Canada hasn't.

Because then you become just as bad as the perpetrator. Eye for an eye? If your child hits you, do you belt them back right in the face? I don't think I could stomach it.

And have they gotten it right? How many innocent people have been vindicated as having been falsely imprisoned? It's bad enough they have spent time in jail - how would you deal with killing someone who in the end turned out to be innocent?

Wanting what I've got. Life is good!

You do have good points that I didn't really take the time to think about. But I do think criminals get away with TOO MUCH in Canada. It's too bad they couldn't come up with a better system.

With no intention of getting into a discussion on capital punishment - I always thought that, assuming the person IS guilty - then the death penalty is the easy way out for them - I'd much rather see them stuck in jail,( hopefully with pedophile & child killer hating inmates as cellmates) for a very long life.

And I never have understood how the quote "eye for an eye" is never finished by people trying to justify it - it finishes "vengence is MINE" saith the Lord.

And yes, innocent people have been executed - and there is no turning back from that.

Hrm, maybe time to split off a capital punishment thread.

And I'm sure you realized, but to clarify - I was doing the OPPOSITE of justifying the 'eye for an eye'. I think a lot of people leave it off because that's a quote from the mean vengeful God - what happened to love thy neighbour? If God's going to exact vengeance, then he really becomes a "Do as I say, not as I do" hypocrite.

yeah well sometimes 'love thy neighbour' goes too far.. case in point this this poor girls death. I would say i am for capital punishment, but then its not a perfect world and people have been found innocent after they have died. But I also think jail is too easy.

Look at Karla Homolka, she kills her sister, help out the police to nab her hubby for it when she was just as much at fault, partied in jail (there were pictures of the parties), had a girlfriend in Jail, then a boyfriend turned fiance while in jail, then when she got out tried to sell her story. Also Clifford Olsen, he has played the system like a fiddle. All for his own amusment. costing the tax payers tons of money, we know he did it, he told the police where they could find more bodies of children. Then the most recent, Robert Pickton. He killed all those women, and no i dont think he acted alone the whole time. All those poor women died terrible deaths in his hands and he is just going to sit in Jail fo the rest of his life watching Dr. Phil. (some may think that is punishment enough haha....) but seriously our system is flawed on the side of being too easy.

In the case of Karla Homolka , I would point the blame at the crown prosecutors that cut a sweet deal with her ....................something that never should have happened in the first place . Sometimes people just want the case over and done with quick with out having all the facts in place first , this is one way people get away with so much .
I'm not in favor with capital punishment either , I figure to die is the easy way out , how can you suffer once your dead
Let the other inmates deal with child molesters and child killers , after all most of them jump at the chance to make other inmates pay when it comes to children .

True Robert , usually the more high profile cases never go into the general public of the facilities .
Eventually some do get theirs though , karma does have a way of working these things out most times IMO .

I totally realized you were not justifying the "eye for an eye" position, but my thinking is that people leave the end of the quote off because they want revenge with a clear conscience. I also believe in the two personas of God as Man and as a God. As a man he is subject to the same conflicts and feelings we are, whether it be "love thy neighbour" or "vengence is mine", as is evidenced by the usually gentle Jesus who destroyed the money lenders operation in the Temple.

On the subject of whoever or whatever committed this crime on a child - years ago my father was involved in the investigation into the Clifford Olsen child murders in B.C. He never disclosed the nature of the atrocities that man perpetrated, but my usually gentle & forgiving father told me that, after Olsen's arrest, he had prayed that he would be released into the general prison population so that they could exact the vengence on this monster that the legal system wouldn't permit.

Just my 2 cents worth
