One way to settle the argument...

website returns ~40,300,000 hits while web site returns only ~4,510,000.

Personally, I use whatever's easier to type -- but I stop where it get's too "net chatty". So "email", and "website" but non of those shortened things like

The terms are so new that there's no "correct" way, IMHO. New words appear all the time, and they become "correct" with mass use. I make up my own words sometimes too

I voted for "web site", but according to http://www.bartleby.com/61/57/W0075725.html I am wrong.

I was the technical editor for a book on intranets a few years ago, and I think the writers and producer got sick of me "correcting" hyperlink (hypertext link), website, etc. I don't think it really matters these days because they're all understood, and it's mostly a matter of preference.

BTW, good link CigarsandPars. The Usage says:

I thought that the correct choice is Web site since World Wide Web is capitalized and site should not be. Anyway that's my crude justification.

I believe it is actually "Web site", which was not one of the choices listed. Capital W Web as in World Wide Web and small s site as in the page on which the information is located. (Web page, Web address, Web Designer). I have confirmed this with my hubby who is a Web Developer and he says this is the standard in the industry.

As well, I think it is Internet, as that was the "proper name" of sorts that it was given by the military. Therefore it would be the Internet, not The Internet (the Web, not The Web, the Kleenex, not The Kleenex). However, intranet is not capitalized.

I am not surprised by the many variant spellings of all these words (including e-mail, which I am guilty of spelling "email" out of sheer laziness) since there is so much poor spelling lurking out there. No offense to anyone here (I love you guys) but it's a huge pet peeve of mine.

"They're there to be theirs too." Five of the most mispelled/misused words all in one six-word sentence. You pick them out.

At times, I wouldn't mind having a spell checker at the various forums that I participate in.

Me too. The faster I type, the more mistakes I make. The word I misspell the most is "the". Teh. I don't know why, but my fingers don't want to type t-h-e. Thank God for spell check in Word and Eudora. I still proof everything just in case. It bothers me the most when the bad spelling is my own.

I know what you mean! The word I most often misspell is this It usually ends up tihs.

I think that my most misspelled word is "that" My hands get ahead of me and I usually end up spelling it "taht".

Not that my spelling is good anyways. I used to a great speller in school but my brain is slowly getting all fogged up

Would'nt a spell check be great in here?
